The Cinema Master Plan includes not only a design for the cinema building, but a suite of strategic moves to break down the scale of Queanbeyan’s car-centric large scale blocks. The masterplan includes the creation of new streets and mid-block crossings to establish pedestrian priority streets and public spaces.
The cinema is located within the existing Morriset Street Carpark, transforming it with a new shared street and multipurpose public square. The program for the cinema is split into 2 components, the retail components such as ticketing, candy bar and VIP spaces are located along the retail frontage at street level. The cinemas are located on the floor above, in a large single span structure with light weight cinema walls. This flexible building system allows for the reconfiguration of the cinemas in terms of size and number over time as the demands of the cinema industry change. The external, tent-like envelope of the cinema is clad in vertical metal panels forming a series of arcs that inform the public spaces around the cinema.
