Location: Coffs Harbour City, NSW, Australia
Type: Public Space
Size: 2000 sqm
The existing square of Coffs Harbour City is small, cluttered and lost within the local city-scape. A series of strategic moves unlock the potential of this public space, making way for a thriving heart to the inner city. The proposal includes a reconfiguration of the DCP to make way for a larger and more logical public space, framed by mixed use developments. We believe this move is critical to creating a square with consistent and valuable edge conditions, comprised of both private and public functions. The surface of the square is transformed into a blue soft-fall landscape with markings to indicate and guide a range of activities and programs that go on in the space like the floor of a school gym. The ceiling is a catenary grid of LED lights with intermittent canopy zones, programmable to display patterns and colours to suit different events and atmospheres. This design powerfully demarcates a place for people to congregate within the inner city; providing a highly visible, accessible and playful terrain for the community to program.
